SMU evading the 'hangover effect' as ECU prepares to invade homecoming

There is no more discussion of last week's loss to Memphis. And with ECU coming to the Hilltop, SMU has its blinders on.

There have been times where a football team goes on a nice run, then suffers a close loss, only to have that loss turn into a downward spiral.

SMU Sonny Dykes called it the "hangover effect."

"I think sometimes, when you lose a tough, hard-fought game, you can get a little bit of a hangover effect, and it lingers," Dykes said. "You've got to put it behind you and move on."

Last Saturday's loss to Memphis is barely a discussion piece anymore around the SMU locker room. The Mustangs -- No. 25 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2019, which were released Tuesday. It's homecoming week, and a hungry ECU team is coming to the Hilltop.
