Instant replay and observations from SMU Basketball's 86-83 overtime win over Montreal's McGill University on Tuesday.

What you need to know: Head coach Tim Jankovich said it late last week: SMU's Canadian tour isn't about winning - it's about growing up the new players. That became evident by halftime of the Mustangs' scrimmage against McGill, with every Mustang except walk-on Luke Wilfong playing for at least eight minutes. SMU was trailing 39-37 at the time. Shake Milton, Jimmy Whitt, Ben Emelogu, Jarrey Foster and Akoy Agau started for SMU, but gave way to freshman Ethan Chargois, William Douglas, Everett Ray, Elijah Landrum and Duquense transfer Isiaha Mike. Chargois and Douglas actually led SMU in scoring at the half with eight points.

SMU shot poorly from the perimeter in the first half, but that wasn't a point of emphasis, it seems. 18 of the Mustangs' 28 first half shots came from the paint with SMU outscoring McGill 14-2 in that department. Feeding the ball inside, especially to Agau and Foster, seemed like the goal of the night. SMU Basketball's Twitter didn't share many clips, but almost every clip they did share was of the Mustangs dishing and scoring at the rim. Granted, there's much to be desired with McGill's defense, but it must be noted that Jankovich doesn't seem very concerned with SMU's guards shooting. They can do that. We already know this.

SMU allowed McGill to keep it close and the game was eventually decided in overtime. The game came close to going to double overtime when a three from McGill's Jenning Leung hit the iron and bounced away at the buzzer.

This game was very pre-prescribed, as Jankovich and staff ordered. These summer tour games are meant to prepare for certain situations, and having the game go to overtime was a plus. SMU's freshman got to feel that pressure, even when there wasn't any pressure. SMU's percentages evened out after the half, as they normally do. The Mustangs could have wrecked the Redmen, but would've learned less.

"Guy" of the game: Shake Milton

Milton started off slowly, finishing the first half with only two points, both of which came from the charity stripe. He shot 0-for-4 from the field. But he did warm up, shooting 40 percent (4-for-10) and 25 percent (1-for-4) from the arc. Milton was more impressive in other aspects of the game, finishing with four rebounds (all on the defensive end), two assists and four steals with only one turnover. He finished with 17 points.

Newcomer of the game: Ethan Chargois

This was a nice surprise. Many have wondered how Chargois's conditioning might come along by the regular season and how it might affect his playing time and impact. SMU wasn't playing at full speed against McGill, but a line of 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field is encouraging, even if his rebounding was non-existent.

William Douglas also had a great night, finishing with 10 points and a nice put-back.

Inside look: As previously mentioned, nobody got to see much of this game with the exception of those in attendance and those on the floor. We saw everything through Twitter. Here's some things you might have missed:

This jumper from Jimmy Whitt displays the shooting potential of the Arkansas transfer. Whitt told The Dallas Morning News last week that shooting has been a major focus during the offseason. He's always had a good mid-range game and he shows it here. Notice how he squares his shoulders at the final second -- it improves his shot form and ability to control the ball... vintage Semi Ojeleye move right here.

Moving the ball inside appeared to be plan A on the night for SMU. Here's a nice cutting pass to Jarrey Foster after Isiaha Mike draws an extra defender.

Ben Emelogu's Eurostep is in peak form. Look at how easy Gu gets to the rim while taking advantage of a defender trying to avoid contact. It doesn't look that impressive, but it is. Gu also had some great moments of facilitation in this game -- like this interior feed to Akoy Agau -- and SMU needs that ability. Gu may not be SMU's top scoring threat, but has a high IQ and is defensively solid.

Other stuff:

-- Six of Chargois's points came on three pointers, shooting 50 percent (2-for-4) from the arc. Both three's came in the first half.

-- Freshman Everett Ray didn't score against McGill -- he didn't even take a shot. But he led SMU with seven rebounds.

-- Behind Milton, Douglas was SMU's all-purpose man of the evening: 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.

-- Jarrey Foster finished with 17 points on 83 percent (5-for-6) shooting, only missing one three.

-- As a team, SMU shot 47.4 percent from the field to only 22.7 percent from deep. The Mustangs allowed McGill to shoot 40 and 41 percent respectively.

-- SMU outscored McGill 38-14 in the paint and 10-0 on second chance opportunities.

On deck: SMU will play Toronto's Ryerson University on Thursday, August 10, at 6 p.m. CT. We will update this story on how to watch the game if that information becomes available.
