The SMU basketball coaching staff saved their first 2020 offer for a SMU hoops legacy. Son of former SMU guard Rod Hampton, RJ Hampton received an offer from the staff and to let him know, they kept it in the family.

“My offer from SMU means a lot because I know my whole family likes that I got an offer from the school my dad went to,” Hampton said. “They actually called my dad and they told him then he told me.”

Naturally, Hampton’s recruitment is just picking up as the freshman prepares for his first season of high school ball in Little Elm, Texas. However, he’s already reported offers from SMU, TCU and Texas A&M.

“I’m good and my recruitment process is going good but it’s early,” Hampton said. “It feels nice to have this much interest already. I’m very blessed to be put in the situations I’m in therefore, I just try to succeed.”

Hampton is a 6-foot-3 point guard and weighs a solid 170 pounds. He undoubtedly has a huge upside and unpredictable potential.

“I think some things that coaches like about my game are my height for my position, I can play defense and shoot the ball well and I can finish in the lane with contact,” Hampton said.

As far as SMU goes, Hampton is very familiar with the team and the environment.

“Well, I’ve been around SMU all my life because of my dad,” Hampton said. “I visited a lot of games last year as a recruit. I’ve liked SMU from my experiences so far.”

Despite receiving love from his dad’s alma mater, Hampton has eyes for big name programs as well.

“Other schools I think would be cool to check out are Kentucky, Duke and UCLA,” Hampton said. “The history they have with winning and basketball plus the programs and fan bases are great.”
