One and done is a phrase synonymous with college basketball but in the case of new SMU commit Chance Billington the saying applies just as well.
The class of 2019 guard rewarded SMU's early persistence by announcing on Sept. 7 he will be the first member of StangGang 19. SMU is the only team to have offered the John Tyler High School (Tyler, TX) prospect but Billington is sure of his decision even two years before his official signing day and before he made his first visit to campus for the UNT game this past weekend.
"I went to the game (vs. UNT) Saturday and the environment is beautiful, the football program is great and its amazing, they really made me feel at home and even though it was my first offer, I really felt I made a great decision," Billington said, "Just getting a taste of the environment made me feel even better about it."
SMU discovered Billington last spring and coupled with his relationships with current Mustangs Kayce Medlock and Judah Bell, Billington was won over quickly.
"I saw them (Medlock and Bell) at the game and it was good to hear that they are doing well, and it made me happy to think that could be me in the future," Billington said.
Billington was candid about what he wants to improve upon before he heads to the college level.
"The speed is way different so I have to adjust to that and then I need to work on things like keeping my pad level low, staying in a good three-point stance when I'm tired, footwork and things like that," Billington said.
Billington is continuing to speak regularly with offensive line coach Dustin Fry and said he will be at more SMU home games this season and beyond. A teenager might wake up and change his mind on a whim, but this 6-foot-3, 300-pound prospect seems true to his word.
"I know its early," Billington said, "but they have made me feel so comfortable and I feel like I can talk to them (SMU coaching staff) about anything. The program is just amazing."
