SMU already has one 2018 running back commit, Jahmyl Jeter, but they are closing in on another commitment as Angleton High School 3-star TaMerik Williams narrows down his top 5 choices. Williams listed SMU in his top 5 a long with two other AAC schools, Memphis and UH, UNLV and Louisiana-Lafayette.
"Three of my current top 5 schools are in the AAC and I like the conference," Williams said. "It's a competitive conference."
While SMU and UH both have RB commits in the 2018 class, Jeter and Kelan Walker from DeSoto, Memphis has yet to secure a big ball carrier. That doesn't seem to have a big impact on Williams' decision though.
"Whatever school I end up at I know I'm going to have to work to secure a spot, that's just a part of football," Williams said. "But I like having to compete."
"The school I choose will feel like home," Williams said. "That's how you know it's the best fit and that they will take care of you."
The 6-foot, 195-pound running back visited SMU for a spring practice and said he loved the coaches, meeting the players and the atmosphere around practice.
"I feel like SMU has a great coaching staff and they're definitely on the rise in college football," Williams said. "I really like running back's coach Traylor."
Williams says he doesn't have a commitment date in mind and he said he's still attracting attention from more programs so he's likely to carry his recruitment through the fall to take into account all of his options. While his top 5 are subject to change, Williams wants to work on his catching, getting open and his ability to adjust to the ball while it's in the air, in the hopes of rounding out his skill set and attracting more big offers.
