3-star ATH Keitha Jones Commits to SMU

SMU Football is currently tearing up the recruiting trail, having just received its third commitment in six days.

The Mustangs' latest commitment came out of Port Arthur, TX, with 3-star WR/ATH Keitha Jones Jr. announcing his decision on Twitter with a custom graphic.

The 6-2 ATH weighs in at 190 lbs., the perfect size to play a variety of positions. Jones currently plays on offense at Memorial High School, but could very easily transition into a roll in the defensive secondary at the college level.

Jones committed to SMU over Tulane, Texas State, New Mexico, Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christian, Southeastern Louisiana, UL-Lafayette and Southern. Baylor had been keeping tabs on him as well. Jones was primarily recruited to The Hilltop by linebackers coach Archie McDaniel.

Much of Jones' film from junior year shows him playing at wide receiver. His above average field vision and acceleration are immediately noticeable, allowing him to cut up field quickly and maneuver around defenders that have a jump on him. His sustained speed is decent as well.

Another apparent strength? Catching in traffic. Jones displays the ability to go up and bring down the ball in danger close situations, even when double covered by larger defenders.

Jones can also run the ball, using his acceleration to cut the corner on sweeps and pitches. If he gets his block, look out.

Jones plays some defense already, mostly lining up as an outer linebacker or safety. His tackling ability is sneaky good when he can stay in front of defenders. His ability to bring ball carriers down in one-on-one situations makes him stand out -- don't be surprised if SMU's staff moves him exclusively to defense. Jones' tackling in space might be his most underrated quality.

In Keitha Jones, SMU has landed a relatively unheard-of player with some tremendous upside. Jones excels as a receiver, but could flourish in an SMU secondary known for creating turnovers. With great hands and tackling, Chad Morris may have just unearthed the next Jordan Wyatt.
