Trestan Ebner commits to SMU, is first member of 2017 class

2017 Henderson wide receiver Trestan Ebner was not short on options. He held an offer from Kansas and got interest from the likes of TCU, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Oklahoma State.

But late Wednesday night the three-star prospect decided to wrap up his recruitment, committing to Chad Morris and SMU.

"I just feel comfortable with the coaching staff. I like how they act and carry themselves as a staff," Ebner told the HillTopics. "I like how religious they are. I come from a religious home. You can tell they're being honest with you, keeping it real."

Ebner got his SMU offer this past summer when assistant Jess Loepp came to watch his summer practice at Henderson. Since then the two's relationship grew stronger until Ebner called him to make his commitment to SMU official.

"I talk to him almost every day. We've grown quite fond of each other," Ebner said. "He was excited. He was just saying how happy he was and how glad he was that I was becoming a Mustang."

Ebner spoke to SMU head coach Chad Morris the same night and got a similar excited reaction.

"I've spoken to him on the phone before. I like him. I haven't met him in person but he's supposed to visit in January," Ebner reported.

Ebner will be visiting SMU himself in January for one of the Junior Days but he took a visit earlier this year for SMU's win over UNT.

"I liked it how. I liked how they handled the players and I liked how they all came together to win," Ebner said. "(The campus) is really pretty. I really didn't get to look at it all because I was late getting to the game but what I saw I liked."

The first member of SMU's 2017 class, Ebner is already talking to one friend about joining him is StangGang17: Arp running back Kayce Medlock, who got an offer from SMU this past week.

"We played together, used to be teammates in middle school. I spoke to him. Gonna try to get him to join me at SMU," Ebner said.
