Sonny Dykes reflects on moment that changed SMU's culture
After coaching SMU in its 2017 bowl game, Sonny Dykes, now in his second full season as head coach, has the Mustangs at 8-0 this season.
Sonny Dykes could finally laugh about his SMU coaching debut, and about 250 red and blue-clad fans smiled back at him during his radio show Monday evening.
His willingness to coach the Mustangs in the 2017 Frisco Bowl just nine days into his tenure endeared him to the fan base momentarily, but it became a case study in why new head coaches tend to defer bowl responsibilities to the outgoing staff, win or lose.
