SMU scorches TCU 66-42 in The Battle For The Iron Skillet

The 103rd meeting in the Battle For The Iron Skillet between SMU and TCU had the feeling of a battle between two teams that had something to prove. The SMU Mustangs had a week off, coming off a 18-15 loss to BYU. While the TCU Horned Frogs come into Dallas looking to get into the win column, after losing a tough one at home to UCF 35-34.

SMU received the kickoff and went right to work. Kevin Jennings was perfect going 5-5 and Brashard Smith made several key runs to put the Mustangs in field goal position. Collin Rogers connected on a 51 yard field goal to put SMU 3-0.

The Mustang defense was fast and furious and came up with a big hit on third down to force a fumble. Brandon Crossley scooped up the fumble and returned it 51 yards to give the Mustangs a 10-0

After the Mustangs defense forced a three and out, Roderick Daniels Jr. got loose for a 69 yard punt return for a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 17-0 lead.

After a TCU score, the Mustangs got it going offensively on the ground behind the superb running of Brashard Smith. Smith made a couple defenders miss in the open field en route to a 25 yard score to extend the lead to 24-14.

Jordan Hudson caught a 10 yard pass from Kevin Jennings late in the 2nd quarter to put SMU up 31-21.

The Mustangs defense, which put pressure on Josh Hoover for much of the first half, forced an interception and Ahmaad Moses stepped in front of the pass. Moses took the pass up the sideline for a 60 yard pick six to put SMU up 38-21.

Before the end of the half after a Mustang defensive stop, SMU got a another field goal from Collin Rogers to take a sizeable lead at the half 41-21 over TCU.

In the second half SMU put the game away by scoring 18 points in the 3rd quarter and taking full control of the game. Brashard Smith scored three times, 2 rushing and 1 receiving touchdown of 24 yards from Kevin Jennings to shut the door on the Horned Frogs for good.

Smith had 127 yards rushing and three touchdowns to help the Mustangs roll over the Horned Frogs 66-42, keeping the Iron Skillet in Dallas. The 66 points scored by SMU is the most points scored in the Battle For The Iron Skillet history. With the win over TCU, SMU moves to 3-1 and will host Florida State on September 28th in their ACC Conference opener at Gerald Ford Stadium.
