Kearns Discusses SMU Pledge

On Tuesday morning California four-star quarterback Kyle Kearns gave a verbal pledge to SMU. The signal caller, ranked as the No. 12 pro-style quarterback in the country by Rivals, made the decision after taking an unofficial visit to Colorado.

"I thought my perspective was broad enough to make a good decision," explained Kearns. "Overall I think SMU is the best school for me. I sat down with my parents last night and went over what schools had to offer and the overall feel I had when on the SMU campus for their spring practices was just different."

Kearns thought of committing after making that unofficial to SMU earlier in the spring but it wasn't until he was on campus at Colorado that he sense the difference between the Mustangs and other schools.

"Colorado was nice it just wasn't the same feel as I got at SMU. You can't describe it, it's just this feeling of comfort and security that I got at SMU but didn't feel anywhere else. I really like Dallas and Highland part, I already feel like it's a home away from home."

This morning the No. 44 player in California, according to Rivals, called SMU QB coach Dan Morrison to give the staff the news.

"I called coach Morrison and he put me on speaker with coach [June] Jones. They were ecstatic, they were so happy that I was committing. I was thrilled to talked to them, I felt like it was a long time coming.

"It's a great feeling to have them so happy that I committed. Those are the guys that I will be around constantly in college and they will basically be second parents to. I have a really good bond with them."

Kearns also had a very strong message to SMU fans.

"I want to tell them that we are going to be as good as the team was back in the 80's but we are going to do it the right way. We aren't going to need to do illegal recruiting to be as good as they were back then."

The Pleasanton native stands at 6-foot-2, 188-pounds. We will continue to have more coverage of the four-star's commitment to the Mustangs.
