Huhn Talks SMU Commitment and Coaches

SMU got a huge win last month when the coaching staff secured the commitment of 3-star offensive lineman Matthew Huhn. He’s ranked in the top 100 in the state of Texas for 2017 and best of all, the Mustangs were able to pick him up after he decommitted from AAC rival University of Houston.

“I didn’t go to any SMU games this season,” Huhn said. “But I obviously watched the SMU versus UH game and then I also watched TCU and Baylor. I don’t think I ever thought I’d play for them when I watched them, not that I had anything against them and I did like watching them play, I just didn’t think I would play for them.”

The SMU upset win over Houston this season left an impression on most fans and that’s when Huhn saw the turn-around SMU had been promising begin to show. The consistent efforts of the coaches to keep in touch with the offensive lineman however were what really kept Huhn on the line.

“Well SMU was one of the schools that had been one of my favorites before I had committed to Houston and even after I committed they still sent me mail and kept in touch,” Huhn said. “They were one of the first schools to start talking to me after I decommitted and it just went from there.”

The SMU coaching staff puts building relationships with their recruits at the top of their priority list and Huhn’s relationships with his offensive line coach and head coach have gotten off to a great start.

“I probably talk to Coach Fry and Coach Morris the most,” Huhn said. “I think they’re fantastic. From the first time I met Coach Fry in junior year I thought he was a great guy. And Coach Morris as well. They’re both really genuine guys and they just treat you and your family well. I love them both.”

The Mustangs who finished 2-10 two seasons ago made a very positive turnaround in 2016 to end Coach Morris’s second season on the Hilltop at 5-7.

“The coaching staff has proven that they can turn things around,” Huhn said. “That was why I’ve ended up liking them so much after seeing that turn-around. It’s really impressive to see what they’ve done with a team that’s mostly sophomores and freshmen. It’s great to see how good they are at coaching and their personalities.”

Huhn is widely considered to be, and is, one of the strongest commits SMU has obtained in the Chad Morris era and if he has any say in the matter, he’ll be fighting to protect the Mustang’s quarterback by starting on the offensive line next season.

“It sounds like there’s a chance I’ll be fighting for a starting spot next year but it’s never guaranteed. I need to bust my butt in the weight room and get a jump on learning offensive plays but a lot of it is about conditioning.”
