To defeat Navy, SMU's defense will have to play disciplined football and crack the code of the Midshipmen's effective triple-option offense.
For decades, the triple-option offense has been the pride of Navy football. In an era where more and more college football teams are compiling yards via the pass, Navy has maintained a run-heavy system that has been effective.
Effective and, this year, very dangerous for opposing defenses. Navy is averaging 349.3 rushing yards per game, which ranks No. 1 in the country among FBS teams.
"They've been doing this a long time," SMU coach Sonny Dykes said. "And they do a good job of staying one step ahead of you."
