The SMU football team made history last week when they cracked the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time since 1986. The Mustangs, however, were on the outside looking in of last week's Coaches Poll.

SMU is now ranked in both polls after beating Tulsa on Saturday and improving to 6-0 on the season and earning bowl eligibility. The latest Coaches Poll was released shortly before noon Sunday, and the Mustangs checked in at No. 22.

SMU technically was ranked No. 27 last week. The Mustangs had 118 votes and trailed No. 25. Oklahoma State (158). Cal was 26th with 125 votes.

SMU received help getting in from losses to Washington (previously No. 16), UCF (No. 19), Michigan State (No. 23) and Oklahoma State (No. 25). The Mustangs were the highest ranked of four brand new teams in the poll -- the others being No. 23 Baylor, No. 24 Arizona State and No. 25 Minnesota.
