Playing well on both sides of the ball is key, but the success on the offensive side of the ball has been a topic of discussion with the SMU football team.

In the season opener against Arkansas State, the Mustangs compiled 508 yards and 29 first downs. The following win over North Texas included 503 yards and 25 first downs.

Last Saturday's 47-17 win against Texas State reached historic proportions. SMU tallied 23 first downs, but it was the 639 yards of total offense that placed this year's team in the record books. Against Texas State, the Mustangs statistically recorded the third-best single-game offensive performance in school history.

Only a 728-yard effort against Temple in 2013 and a 653-yard effort last year against Houston Baptist were better than what SMU did last Saturday.

SMU rushed for 390 yards and five touchdowns in the win. It was the most rushing yards for the Mustangs in 37 years; SMU set an all-time record on Sept. 11, 1982, by rushing for 519 yards against Tulane.

SMU's offense now will prepare for its biggest test of the year, as it faces No. 25 TCU, a team allowing only 209.5 yards per game on defense. The Mustangs will visit TCU Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
