SMU got the win Saturday against then-No. 25 TCU. The Mustangs are 4-0 for the first time since 1984.
The focus now is on staying undefeated.
American Athletic Conference play is here for the Mustangs, as they gear up for a road test against USF. SMU is considered an early favorite over the Bulls, but the next five days will be those of self-reflection.
And by self-reflection, the Mustangs will look at what they can do, versus what they have done.
"The big thing we've got to do now is focus on getting better every week," SMU coach Sonny Dykes said Monday. "Don't spend too much time patting ourselves on the back, because we haven't really accomplished anything up to this point."
The Bulls, coached by Charlie Strong, were idle last week but were dominant in a 55-16 rout over FCS team South Carolina State on Sept. 14. USF opened the year with losses to Wisconsin and Georgia Tech.
Against South Carolina State, USF tallied 459 yards of total offense. Defensively, the Bulls set a program record by forcing eight turnovers -- five fumbles and three interceptions -- in the win. The eight turnovers set up 42 points off turnovers.
"Playing a team that has a bye, that's always concerning when you open up on the road in the conference and against a team that didn't play like last week," Dykes said. "They've had extra time to prepare for us and get healthy and rested. It'll be a big challenge for us."
The confidence for SMU, however, is elevated after beating TCU in Fort Worth to retake the coveted Iron Skillet. The Mustangs' offense compiled 406 total yards for the game, 276 of those coming in the first half. SMU scored 31 first-half points against a TCU defense then ranked No. 2 in the country.
Dykes notices the swagger with his team, but he also wants them to understand that USF will be hungry to quell the buzz around the SMU campus.
"Our players are playing with some confidence," he said. "We need to have a good week of practice and try to go up and figure out a way to win a game.
Injury update
Dykes on Monday said linebacker Richard Moore, who didn't play last Saturday with an undisclosed injury, should be considered questionable -- and possibly doubtful -- for this week against USF. "It doesn't look good right now," Dykes said. Moore will continue to be evaluated throughout the week. ... SMU's defensive lineman depth took a hit, as Harrison Loveless has been declared out for the year. Loveless sustained a knee injury two weeks ago. ... The special teams received good news, as kicker Kevin Robledo is expected to return to practice this week.
