DALLAS (THEHILLTOPICS) — According to the AP Reyne Smith scored 30 points while matching his career high with a school-record 10 3-pointers and No. 25 Louisville won its first game as a ranked team in four years, beating Atlantic Coast Conference newcomer SMU 98-73 on Tuesday night.
It was the kind of that game that confirmed Louisville guard Chucky Hepburn deserves a long and serious look as a first-team all-ACC player.
Chucky Hepburn also contributed with 13 points and a career-best 16 assists, setting another program record. The victory extended Louisville’s winning streak to nine games, with J’Vonne Hadley and James Scott adding 16 points each.
Under first-year coach Pat Kelsey, Louisville, bolstered by transfers and one freshman, made its return to the AP Top 25 for the first time since January 2021.
For SMU (14-5, 5-3), Matt Cross led the team with 18 points, and B.J. Edwards scored 16. The Mustangs had their three-game win streak snapped.
The Cardinals took control early, with Hepburn hitting a 3-pointer to start the game and quickly building a 32-point lead, never allowing SMU to gain the advantage.
