Lamont Johnson Talks Commitment

The SMU coaching staff got big news on Sunday morning when South Oak Cliff two-star wide receiver Lamont Johnson pulled the trigger and gave a verbal commitment to the coaching staff.
The local receiver was on campus this morning for an unofficial visit and was hosted by wide receivers coach Jason Phillips who has been building a relationship with Johnson.

'We have been talking for about three weeks," explained Johnson. "We've been building a good relationship since then. I could tell him and coach [June] Jones were really happy that I committed this morning.
"They told me that as long as I'm committed to them that they will be committed to me. I really liked that about them."
Johnson, who holds offers from Southern Illinois, and Central Oklahoma along with the Mustangs just finished up spring ball at South Oak Cliff and is now focused on the summer ahead now that he has given a pledge to SMU.
"When we go back to school on Monday we are going to start our summer program. Ia m going to try and put on a few pounds but don't want to add too much because I don't want to slow down. I mostly just want to get stronger."
As far as visits are concerned it's still unclear if any more visits will happen over the summer now that Johnson has committed.
"I am going to be sitting down with my mom over the next few days and see if we have time to go check out any other schools or attend any summer camps. I don't have anywhere in particular I want to go to, just want to check out some schools."
What is clear already is how much the two-star's mom liked the Hilltop and the education SMU has to offer her son.
"My mom visited campus with me and she was happy I committed. She really liked what they had to say about the study hall hours, the graduation rate, and everything else about the academics there. She wants me to go somewhere and get an education, not just play football."
The visit that Johnson made on Sunday to the SMU campus was the first one he's made in a few years when he visited on a school trip. While things were on campus were closed on Sunday he still was impressed with what he saw during the unofficial visit.
We will continue to follow the summer for the 5-foot-11, 162-pound receiver, including if he decides to make more visits. For now Johnson becomes the second member of the 2015 class for the SMU football staff.
