A hefty showing of scouts at SMU’s pro day has already paid off for three Mustang alums.
The Kansas City Chiefs signed safety/linebacker Shakiel Randolph as an undrafted free agent, kicker Chad Hedlund got a tryout at Cleveland Browns camp and the Dallas Cowboys called upon Zach Wood for weekend workouts during rookie minicamp last weekend.
“I got a call after the draft and they asked me to come do a try out with them,” Wood said.
In his four years as a Mustang, Wood started 33 games at defensive end but to be a pro, Wood knows his best shot is to play long snapper.
“It feels very competitive just because you know everyone here is the best from where they come from,” Wood said.
Wood, a Rowlett, Texas native, could not have been handed a more sought after opportunity.
“Wearing the star feels like a dream come true,” Wood said. “The Cowboys were my favorite team when I was growing up. So, being able to come out here, put the pads on and hang out with the coaches is pretty cool.”
After Pro Day, Wood was slightly disappointed in how he had performed in front of the scouts and the draft days were a reminder of that disappointment.
“When I got the call I couldn’t really believe it because I wasn’t expecting a call,” Wood said. “I got a call on the way to go work out because I was pissed about the draft and I was stoked. I got to celebrate with my family and it was a cool experience.”
Wood’s former teammates kept up with his performance through the minicamp with phone calls and he said he was just very grateful for the opportunity and the experience.
