Hunter Thedford commits to SMU

Less than a week after he got his offer, 6-foot-7 Comanche defensive end Hunter Thedford committed to SMU.
"I'm happy to be a part of the family," Thedford told the HillTopics. "All the coaches coming in are not new guys. Chad Morris was the offensive coach at Clemson and he was a big part of how good Clemson was. And Oklahoma State, they're putting together a plan that will make SMU successful."

Thedford, who decommitted from UTEP after getting his Mustang offer on Sunday, spoke with a number of SMU coaches to share the good news but one call in particular excited him.
"Coach Morris he was ecstatic," Thedford said. "He was glad to get somebody who does things right on defense and will fit in in their scheme."
While Thedford played tight end in high school as well, SMU plans to utilize him as a full-time defensive end. And while he had a relationship with Bill Young, the SMU defensive line coach who left for Tulsa, Thedford said that did not affect his decision.
"Coach Young had the scheme I wanted but when I talked to coach (Archie McDaniels) and coach (Van) Malone, they'll have same thing that fits me on defense.
Thedford will visit SMU on January 15 to meet his new classmates. He knows Hunter Herndon, whom he described as "a real good tight end," from some football camps but otherwise Thedford will be meeting the 2015 class for the first time.
"I'm really excited, I'm ready to get over there. It sucks to be going back to high school, when you have work to do in college. I am excited, it's a great opportunity to get your college paid for and extend your football career."
