Elijah Landrum Announces Transfer Out of SMU

With around 47 percent of teams experiencing one or more transfers a season these days, it's no surprise that SMU wasn't going to be immune this year after seeing three freshmen transfer out after last season. This year, it's freshman point guard Elijah Landrum.

Landrum announced on Twitter Thursday afternoon that he'll transfer from SMU and pursue the rest of his academic and athletic career at another university. Landrum had stopped participating in team activities once the season was over.

"It was tough on the coaches but they were very understanding," Landrum told Rivals.

Landrum played 17.5 points per game on a team that severely lacked depth but only contributed 3.1 points per game and made just 28 percent of his 122 shots from the field. It was clear from his wild shots that he still had quite a ways to go to develop but he was a leader coming out of high school and the 2017 class's first commit.

Landrum, a three-star recruit, was offered under Larry Brown in July of 2015. The 6-foot-0 point guard put SMU in his top five before choosing the Mustangs over Tulsa, Stephen F. Austin, FIU and VCU.

Despite his poor shooting his freshman year, Landrum is still a good point guard with great court vision. He's got solid fundamentals and it'll be interesting to see how he does after a whole season to refine his skills.

With Jarrey Foster's draft hopes up in the air, Akoy Agau's decision to return for another year still looming and now Landrum's choice to transfer out of the program, the Mustangs could potentially have three open scholarships. Nabbing JUCO transfer point guard Ricky Torres is even more critical now with Landrum off the roster.
