SMU picked up two new commits on Wednesday night. Harrison Loveless, a defensive tackle for Cypress Ranch High School, committed after falling in love with SMU at the Red-Blue Spring Game. The 2017 defensive tackle is 6-foot-3 and 257 pounds.

“Tonight is going great,” Loveless said. “I’m extremely excited about SMU. After going to the SMU spring game I really enjoyed the campus and the coaches. I’ve been praying and talking about this with my family for a while and today, I decided it was time to commit.”

The defensive lineman also holds an offer from new SMU rival, University of Houston but SMU had a much bigger upside despite Houston being close to home.

“Every coach will teach you how to play football but the reason SMU stood out to me was because they all had a close bond like a family,” Loveless said. “They also put academics first, which is a big reason why they caught my eye. The coaches also have great moral character.”

Loveless says he already has a great relationship with his position coach, coach Buddy Wyatt, and he’s the coach that came down to recruit him. The studious player plans to either major in physical therapy or kinesiology. The SMU coaches already outlined the role Loveless will play for the team in the next few years.

“As of right now I’ll come in playing defensive end and as I gain weight they will move me around as needed,” Loveless said.

Loveless has faith that the program has already made significant progress in turning around under coach Chad Morris.

“It’s a rebuilding program but coach Morris as the head coach of the program is only going to make it better,” Loveless said. “They coaches were all excited about my commitment and a few of the other commits also messaged me saying congrats.”
