SMU kept the commitment train rolling on Friday when Pearland cornerback Justin Guy-Robinson ponied up. His commitment closed SMU up at the cornerback position for the 2017 class.
Guy-Robinson's recruitment was just getting started, with SMU the first to offer and quickly followed up by East Carolina and Army.
But instead of waiting things out to see what else came up, Guy-Robinson did not want to waste anytime before he committed to SMU.
"They really showed me that they cared for me as a person more than as an athlete," Guy-Robinson told the HillTopics. "They saw something in me that other schools didn't. I believe in what they said and I'm ready to show them why they trusted me with this opportunity."
His love for SMU boiled down to a few key things.
"It was really a family thing and also they showed me a lot of love and that they're family-oriented. The education is great and they explained that once I graduate I'll be able to make an impact immediately and play."
Guy-Robinson wants to study kinesiology at SMU in hopes of becoming a physical therapist after school.
He was recruited primarily by linebacker coach Archie McDaniel and defensive coordinator Van Malone but it was really McDaniel whom he spoke with the most. It was the LB coach who offered Guy-Robinson and spoke with him every day for the three weeks between the offer and the commitment.
That commitment came on Guy-Robinson's first visit to SMU, where he got to meet head coach Chad Morris for the first time.
"He's a genuine guy," Guy-Robinson said of Morris. "Everything he was saying was convincing. He was just saying it to get me there. I feel like he's a guy that I can know for a long time even after graduating."
Guy-Robinson got to tell Morris his decision in person before he left to return to Pearland.
"He was excited. He gave me a poker chip that said #PonyUp to make it official. Everyone was excited. He said he couldn't wait to send out his tweet and he called me a lock-down DB so that was great."
Morris introduced Guy-Robinson to offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Joe Craddock and had a request for the new commit.
"He said, 'I want you to make his career hard for him,'" Guy-Robinson laughed.
The sights of the SMU campus and facilities were another highlight on the visit.
"I went into the classes and stuff and they explained the educational stuff that I will be able to access while I am there," Guy-Robinson recounted. "Then I saw the facility and saw the field and then they're doing renovations. They're going to build an indoor practice facility and re-doing their locker room.
"They're locker room is amazing. I love how it's put together and the school as a whole it was great."
